Relative costs of cancer
According to the American Cancer Society (2000) the total annual cost of cancer in the US is $180.2 billion (direct medical costs & indirect morbidity and mortality costs). 50% of these costs is concerned with breast, lung, and prostate cancers. Prostate cancer costs a total of $5 billion a year. If prostate cancer is localized at time of diagnosis the annual cost of direct care ranges from $10,000.00 to $20,000.00 a year; if the cancer is advanced upon diagnosis the annual cost increases to $30,000.00 to $100,000.00 a year.
